Behind the Scenes: Bertelsmann HR Services Internship Blog

Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services

Feed:

HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.

Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.

This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!

Interns in Germany participate in company presentations to learn more about the different business units.

Hey everyone,

That’s me again, reporting about the internship at Bertelsmann and life in New York City. Last week I had to select three projects on which I will work during the next two months. The internship will end with the final presentation on my findings and results of these projects. This sounds interesting and challenging. From the beginning I had the freedom to choose the projects I liked and create these in the way I think that these are beneficial for the comprehension and application of my topics.

Besides working I enjoy spending time with my colleagues. We have so much fun and this makes the time more valuable. During lunchtime we typically go outside and take pictures, explore the local restaurants or just relax in Central Park. Additionally we had breakfast with all the colleagues from our floor. Employees from different departments met together and introduced themselves to the group.

Take care!

Swetlana

Learning by doing

29. March 2010 @ 22:13 · Assigned to -
Hello everyone

Hope everything is going well. During the week I have worked on different tasks. Together with Tiffany and Sebastian we had to make a presentation and present it to our supervisors. Working on one project within a team of different people with different educational background was interesting. On the one side everyone adds his or her ideas and has different views but on the other side it was a challenge to come to one solution and one result.

After the presentation Mio, Freddie and Chris gave feedback. It helped me to improve my weaknesses and get other perspectives. Additionally, I have to accept that things are not the same as learned in the university. After the internship I am sure that I will be more confident with presentations.

Have a nice weekend

Bye bye

Hello everyone,

Beautiful days in New York. The sun is shining, people leave their coats home and go shopping for the new season. The hibernation is over, finally it is spring. Even better to go outside with my colleagues, get some donuts with coffee and relax in the lunch time. Actually, Freddie promised to schedule a meeting outside when it’s gets warmer. I am looking forward.

Within our department at Bertelsmann we have a new intern in our team, Sebastian. Lucky guy, he will stay for 6 months at Bertelsmann. Together, we were excited about exploring the American festival St. Patrick’s Day. Green dressed people on the streets, long parade on 5th Ave, cotton candy and of course… Irish bars.

Currently I am working on different projects at Bertelsmann. Mostly I am performing Internet research. Finally I have to select and evaluate the information that I have researched and prepare a presentation from the findings. In times of endless information it is a challenge to filter the relevant data and to analyze it in the right manner. The more experience I have the more relevant and precise my results will be.

Have a nice weekend!

Never-ending Adventure

20. November 2009 @ 17:23 · Assigned to -
Hi everybody,

Since it is already Friday again I thought that it would be a good idea to update you on what has been going on this week. Time has been flying by and it feels like it only goes faster and faster. This week I have finished my project about social networks in different countries. The project has been a lot of fun and I believe that the presentation turned out really good. I have also decided what to do for my final project, but I have to do some more research before I tell you more about it. I have also been helping Freddie out with the Bertelsmann University, and since I am a management major it has been really cool to get some pointers on what to think about when hosting an event like this. We have also decided to make a video about how it is to intern at Bertelsmann so this week we have been having brainstorm meetings and our plan is to start filming on Monday. The idea is really cool so I hope that it turns out good.

Yesterday I went to Dave & Busters for the first time in my life and it was so much fun. I also saw the midnight premiere of New Moon, the second Twilight movie, and it was awesome. The funny thing is that the cinema was packed with young girls with Twilight t-shirts and every time one of the good looking guys was shown on the screen everybody was clapping and “ohh-ing”. Very different from going to the cinema in Sweden, and a cool experience. On Thursday the whole IIB group went ice skating in Bryant Park. It was really cool to play around on ice skates in the middle of Manhattan, and every time I looked up it felt surreal. So my life in New York continues, I am learning and experiencing a lot and the adventure is never-ending :)

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

/Nina

Big lights keep inspiring me

Hi everybody,

It is Friday again and my fourth week has passed. It is strange how fast time flies by when you are having fun. It feels like it was yesterday I first walked in to the office and at the same time I feel so comfortable by now that it feels like I have been here for ever. The past week I have mostly been working on my social media project but I have also helped Freddie out with some things and tried to figure out what my final project is going to be. Unfortunately I have not made a decision yet, but at least some ideas have formed in my head. It is crazy how much I have learnt about different technical tools, and all this without even thinking about it. I have to admit that I almost feel tech-savvy nowadays, which is a huge thing since before I came here computers used to stop working as soon as I came close.:) The trying different restaurants mission continues and we are eating in a new place every day, I love trying new food so I am really enjoying myself.

New York has as always been wonderful. The weather has been going crazy and we have had everything from summer warm to freezing cold. I keep on exploring and every day is a new adventure.

Have a nice weekend and I’ll see you all next week!

/ Nina

Miguel @ Bertelsmann!

29. October 2009 @ 17:03 · Assigned to -
Hola everybody I’m Miguel and I come from Puebla, Mexico. I am a part of the IIB program offered by the SUNY New Paltz University and I have been living in New York for almost 3 months now. My program has two main parts, the first; studying on campus and learning the international ways of doing business. This is followed by an internship at New York City.
Luckily I got an interview with the Bertelsmann HR Services department and got the job! Now I’ve been a part of the team for almost two weeks and I can’t start telling how much fun I’ve had. At first I was a bit nervous of how the whole experience was going to be, maybe I was not going to be able to perform the tasks they gave me, or maybe I was not going to have any responsibilities and it was going to be two boring months. I really had no idea what to expect.
It has been great! The whole team; Mio, Freddie, Chris and all the interns are all really cool people who are working in such a relaxed environment. I’m learning way more than I could have expected and I feel that I’m a part of the team already. They really get you involved in any project that they have at the moment, and trust me there is always something going on.
One of my favorite things about working here, (other than the work) is the location of the building and the building itself. We are located probably in one of the coolest areas in Manhattan. For those of you who enjoy a good lunch, you will be extremely happy if you ever get to work here. There are so many great places around; you won’t be eating the same thing twice!

Hey Everyone!

My Name is Kathleen Rios and it is my second week at Bertelsmann. I am a senior at St. John's university. My major is mass communications with a minor in business.
Getting an internship is really important for every career path, i was very excited when I got the internship at Bertelsmann because of their great reputation as one of the world's largest media companies. I am very excited to finally be here.
I am from Great  Neck, NY so commuting to the city for a job is very different for me. I love the location and the whole vibe from the city. It's great.
I am looking forward to the different tasks we will get to do, I know this will be a great learning experience.
Well that's enough for now.
Hope everyone's day is going as well as mine!

New Intern at Bertelsmann...

16. September 2009 @ 17:32 · Assigned to -
Hey everybody! My name is Michael Francois, and I am one of two new Interns at Bertlesmann HR. After recieving this internship shortly after the interview, I was instantly nervous about commuting to the city every few days. I am from Long Island and whenever I go to the city, it is usually for fun! Little did I know, this place can be pretty fun. The guys here on the 18th floor (Freddie, Chris and Mio) are very easy to get along with. They joke around alot but also work very well together. On my first day, they took me and the 2 other interns (Viktoria and Kathleen) to lunch in the cafeteria downstairs. While we were there we got to know eachother a little bit better. I instantly felt that I was a part of something rather than an outsider.

I am truly looking forward to the tasks that are ahead of me as well as getting to know everyone here better!

Last Day of an Intern-Spring 2009

04. May 2009 @ 23:00 · Assigned to -
Hi all!  Today is my last day.  The final project was presented last week.  Mine was an enhanced version of the current facebook application for Create Your Own Career and although it remains unfinshed I hope a future intern has some fresh ideas about it.  I wanted to put an rss widget into the application and the extra tidbits about history, etc about Bertelsmann needed work.  I wished I had put pictures (ie logos) but oh well...not enough time in the day.  Now I'm about to head out after tying down loose ends getting all the work I've done throughout the semester organized.  And now it's time to go.  The time has really flown by working here and I am very priveleged have worked with some great people.  Mio, Freddie, Chris and Lena filled us with knowledge and advice to carry on into whatever we intend to do with each of our futures.  They're always down for teaching or just some good casual conversation.  And it was never a dull day with my fellow interns Sascha, Alexis, Michelle, Anna, Alex, Sarah, and Victor.  It was great having worked with the whole team.  The experience in one word: unforgetable!

To the remaining interns: have fun and good luck the rest of the way! Rock and roll!!

-Marc

A happy intern from Sweden

04. May 2009 @ 18:24 · Assigned to -
Hi everybody,

My name is Anna Lindholm and I come from Stockholm, Sweden. In Sweden I’m taking a Bachelor in Personnel, Work and Organization, a program which are focusing in HR. This semester I decided to go to New York City to take an International Business program that combine two month of studies and two month of doing an internship. I applied to do my internship at Bertelsmann, and I am so glad that they accepted my application.

So I have been here since March 16th and I have enjoyed every day since then. To be honest I did not know so much about Bertelsmann before, so I did not know what to expect. After only a week or so I realized that I chose an awesome place to do my internship at. Here I have meet some really great, interesting and bright people. Good people who are all willing to help you whenever you got questions or problems. Everyday I am learning and improving my skills.

The great thing about Bertelsmann is that everyone who works here got their own style and personality. And I think that’s a reason why we all work so well in a group. We all complement each other. Further I think it’s great to work with people from different countries. Even if the countries are very different in all kind of ways, we are very alike in how we value and appreciate things.

Today it’s a sad day, not only for me but also from the rest of the team. Alex, Michelle and Alexis had their last day last week. They were all awesome and I am very happy that I got the opportunity to get to know them. But we are very excited to meet the new interns who will start next week!

I could go on and on about how great Bertelsmann is. But I would suggest that you should look at some of Bertelsmann’s videos to see and learn more what Bertelsmann is all about!

Ha det så bra!

Anna
