Behind the Scenes: Bertelsmann HR Services Internship Blog
Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services
HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.
Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.
This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!
Citizenship at Bertelsmann
I cannot believe how fast the time runs. I have just 1 month left. After my graduation in July my status will change from student to an employee. I am excited to make new steps in my life but I wish to do these in New York. Living in the City is fulfilling all my expectations.
Yesterday Random House had a Childrens Day. Employees brought their children to work. Together with other interns we helped out. This is citizenship, one of Bertelsmann core values.
Today my sister and a friend are coming to visit me for one week. I will show them the New Yorker life- the people, the culture, the city, the food, the office…everything. Additionally I have a great chance to see places which I have not even after 3 month.
Wish all a good weekend

Outside the office
I am starting with an interesting experience from last week. During the internship I worked on one project to make research about one social community site which is similar to facebook but for companies. Therefore Chris took me to an event organized in a Sheraton hotel. More than 1200 visitors took part on this meeting. I was excited to learn more about the company and the promotion system, to meet people and see the process of such a big event.
This week my sister and brother-in-law are visiting me and are exploring New York. After work I show them the incredible night life of New York- the city never sleeps. I am glad to have them here so that they can understand why I would like to stay after my graduation in New York.
In the office together with Tiffany, Basti and our new intern Sarah we hold a presentation to our supervisors. With each presentation I realize the improvements of my presentation skills. Based on feedback of Mio, Freddie and Chris I continuously work on my weaknesses and try to make this to my strengths.
Wish you all a great weekend.
Bye und Aufwiedersehen!

Entrepreneural freedom
That’s me again, reporting about the internship at Bertelsmann and life in New York City. Last week I had to select three projects on which I will work during the next two months. The internship will end with the final presentation on my findings and results of these projects. This sounds interesting and challenging. From the beginning I had the freedom to choose the projects I liked and create these in the way I think that these are beneficial for the comprehension and application of my topics.
Besides working I enjoy spending time with my colleagues. We have so much fun and this makes the time more valuable. During lunchtime we typically go outside and take pictures, explore the local restaurants or just relax in Central Park. Additionally we had breakfast with all the colleagues from our floor. Employees from different departments met together and introduced themselves to the group.
Take care!

Value of time
The time is running! It’s now more than 1 month since I am here in New York. In the last week I was very busy with my project. Nearly each morning started with “I have a question…”, “What is…?”, “Can I..?”. It was a huge challenge for me and my colleagues to find the right answer to the questions. In this spirit thank you for your support. Things in my internship are definitely going smoothly. In the last week Chris, Tiffany and I had a photo session in order to give you an impression of the interns at Bertelsmann.
I am enjoying every day of my internship that I stay in New York. For someone who’s living his/her whole life in New York would not understand what this means for me and surely for all other people with the same dream. People get used to things and someday things which were valuable became just part of the life. But that’s the way most humans are.
So, take some minutes to look around you and realize the value of things which are so self-evident.
Enjoy!

It’s a very sad Week . . .
Bad news
#1 . The internship is coming to an end. I never realized it but I didn’t spent much time at Bertelsmann AG. After tallying the days and hours spent in the office out of the six interns I’ve been here the least. I started in October and will leave in December and for 3 days a week and a few hours a day it really hasn’t been a lot of time. But I hope my presence has been just as significant as the other interns.
# 2. Bertelsmann HR services lost their gorgeous German intern: Viktoria Gass. Who has finished her studies in New York and has to return to Germany to take her final exams. I’ll miss learning German at work from her but look forward to crossing paths and seeing her in the future. We’ll keep in contact through facebook!
The good news
In celebration of the holidays the interns were cordially invited to attend an amazing Bertelsmann Party, last night. It really helped create holiday spirit! As a surprise the interns even got a special mention from our COO Rob in his holiday/ year end speech. It was an amazing way to spend our last day with Viktoria and it made saying our good byes a lot easier.
Hope everyone feels the holiday spirit as well! More next week!
Best,
Wendy Eng

My life is a fairytale
To start my blogging career I thought I would tell you a little bit about myself. My name is Nina Lemic, I am from Sweden where I am at my senior year studying Service Management, Retail Management. Currently I am on the IIB program, which means that I have been studying at The State University of New York at New Paltz for two months and last Monday I started my internship at Bertelsmann HR Services where I am going to stay for two months. My blog is mostly going to be about my internship and the experiences I get here, but also about my life in NYC and all the things that this amazing city offers.
So, what have I been doing for the past two weeks? My first week was mostly about getting to know the company, its different branches, their work and websites. Social media is an important part of my work and I am now a proud member of more social media than I knew existed:) I have also learnt how important social media has become for companies, and how many advantages there is to gain. Since I belong to a group of 17 people and everybody is having different internships I can not resist comparing mine with my friends. Many of my friends have been working with standardized, basic tasks like organizing files in alphabetical order or steaming clothes. What I believe makes this internship different and outstanding is that my tasks here help me develop skills that I think are going to help me a lot in my future career. Still, the absolutely best thing about my internship has been my coworkers. The atmosphere in the office is great and we really have a lot of fun together!
About my life in NY, it is amazing and I have fallen in love with this city. I start my days by taking a walk around the big lake in Central Park, which has become my new favorite activity. Among other things I have also been to; a comedy club, a rooftop restaurant, a discussion about the future of women’s fashion with Ashley Olsen and other important fashion specialists, and a career cruise with very nice people and the most wonderful view ever.
This is it for this time, I hope you enjoyed the reading and I’ll update you all soon again.
Enjoy your Halloween weekend,
- Nina Lemic

Summer NYC
Happy Monday everybody! My name is Sarah, I'm from Germany and I've been part of the Bertelsmann Summer intern team since April. I'm having an amazing New York City time and cannot believe I'm leaving so soon! The town’s opening of rooftop bars, beach houses, outdoor concerts, outdoor eating and city beaches is so overwhelming, I’m afraid I will not be able to see everything! But I’m doing my best! I just returned from a weekend trip to Long Island. Relaxing on the beach for 2 days, watching sun sets at the Surf Lodge and driving back to Manhattan to work on Monday, I felt really NY!
Working with the team at HR Services is really rounding off my experience. Everything I work with on a daily basis was totally new to me in the beginning. From twitter to recruiting management tools, or simply working for a multinational media company, the 18th floor was a new arena for me. Now I can proudly say, I became a Web 2.0 expert and picked up some very helpful tools and tips for working in international business. I learnt a great deal from my very skilled co interns, among them the iphone- , video- and Google analytics guru! Sadly, most of them are leaving this month, but I’m sure the next round of experts is soon to come!
Thanks everybody for the great times @ work, and success with your Master programs or jobs that will follow your internships!
-Sarah

A happy intern from Sweden
My name is Anna Lindholm and I come from Stockholm, Sweden. In Sweden I’m taking a Bachelor in Personnel, Work and Organization, a program which are focusing in HR. This semester I decided to go to New York City to take an International Business program that combine two month of studies and two month of doing an internship. I applied to do my internship at Bertelsmann, and I am so glad that they accepted my application.
So I have been here since March 16th and I have enjoyed every day since then. To be honest I did not know so much about Bertelsmann before, so I did not know what to expect. After only a week or so I realized that I chose an awesome place to do my internship at. Here I have meet some really great, interesting and bright people. Good people who are all willing to help you whenever you got questions or problems. Everyday I am learning and improving my skills.
The great thing about Bertelsmann is that everyone who works here got their own style and personality. And I think that’s a reason why we all work so well in a group. We all complement each other. Further I think it’s great to work with people from different countries. Even if the countries are very different in all kind of ways, we are very alike in how we value and appreciate things.
Today it’s a sad day, not only for me but also from the rest of the team. Alex, Michelle and Alexis had their last day last week. They were all awesome and I am very happy that I got the opportunity to get to know them. But we are very excited to meet the new interns who will start next week!
I could go on and on about how great Bertelsmann is. But I would suggest that you should look at some of Bertelsmann’s videos to see and learn more what Bertelsmann is all about!
Ha det så bra!
Anna

It's Tax Day 2009
To summarize what I've done since my last update, it can be summed up into a few words: Online Orientation Training site, specifically for arvato digital's United States and Canada market groups. These sites familiarize new hires about arvato as well as its parent company Bertelsmann, what is expected of employees as well as benefits. My job was to update information and pictures and delete web pages and content as necessary (an example would be pages and content relating to BMG). I wasn't working on this alone. Alexis and I worked on this assignment - go Teamwork! We were able to get these changes finished quickly and easily as compared to what we could have done individually. One of the major things you learn here: TEAMWORK!
To update the team on what we have done so far, we interns took part in a team meeting on the 18th floor conference room.
As for the final project, it seems that everyone is in the planning stages. Our presentation to Freddie, Christian, Lena, and Mio are fast approaching. This is an exciting time because it gives all of us the opportunity to use our skills not just to fulfill a requirement for this internship but to leave a lasting footprint on Bertelsmann when we leave.
Exciting times ahead!
- Marc
PS-Hope everyone filed their taxes on-time!

1,2,3...Weeks!
Here I Go Again...
So, this week was exciting just like all the others. Michelle and I worked on our new project, which we think is brillant, although it's still in the planning phase. I looked at a few more of the sites that Bertelsmann maintains and I was able to give input on what I felt would make it look better.
(Side Note: Lunch is really great around here. Just stop by the cafeteria or any of the shops and you'll find that everything looks as good as it tastes.)
Back to business! I thought this week went well and I got a lot accomplished. I'll continue to keep you posted...Until Next Time. Peace. :)
