Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services
HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.
Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.
This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!
A Good Week
Another week has passed and all is well in the office. Today we gave our first presentation to the team. It went well but we received many helpful hints to make are presentation much more informative, personal, and professional. It was a good learning experience and I am thankful for the opportunity to be critiqued, so in the future I can give better presentations. We also received a list of various projects we can work on independently to keep Bertelsmann connected with the latest trends, making sure it remains on top of everything. They seem very interesting and I’m ready to get down to business and present my feedback to the team. Next week I will be testing out the equipment so I can shoot the Bertelsmann HR Services North America video. I’m anxious and excited to see everything work out. At our presentation we were treated to pizza. At this time we tried to instruct Swetlana and Sebastian on the proper “American” or “New York “ style of eating pizza affectionately known as “The Fold”. This is where you fold the slice in half holding it at the crust to eliminated mess. They did not grasp this concept but Freddie and I ensured them that it is yet another crucial mannerism that makes them look like less of a tourist. That’s all I have for you today. Good News All Around
The weather is finally starting to feel like spring. I am enjoying it to the fullest. This week was pretty good. Although I am not having the best of luck with the editing software slowly but surely I will master it. Figuring everything out allowing me to produce many videos for Bertelsmann. I received some good news and will be soon getting equipment to further help me complete my projects. We also got a new intern my very good friend Basti. I’m starting to feel outnumbered by Germans here but at least I have another person I can play tour guide with. Soon I will be speaking German and they will know English fluently. Swetlana and I must start working out soon. Because Starbuck’s is so close we abuse our rights to a caramel frappuccino by buying one almost everyday. Now we have our personal trainer Mr. Basti who so discretely commented “How many calories is that?” making us aware that maybe we should think about cutting back. Between coffee and Swetlana's love for Dunkin Donuts I think we have our work cut out for us. This week everyone is back in the office and we will be in full effect. Until next time!!!

Hello everyone,
Beautiful days in New York. The sun is shining, people leave their coats home and go shopping for the new season. The hibernation is over, finally it is spring. Even better to go outside with my colleagues, get some donuts with coffee and relax in the lunch time. Actually, Freddie promised to schedule a meeting outside when it’s gets warmer. I am looking forward.
Within our department at Bertelsmann we have a new intern in our team, Sebastian. Lucky guy, he will stay for 6 months at Bertelsmann. Together, we were excited about exploring the American festival St. Patrick’s Day. Green dressed people on the streets, long parade on 5th Ave, cotton candy and of course… Irish bars.
Currently I am working on different projects at Bertelsmann. Mostly I am performing Internet research. Finally I have to select and evaluate the information that I have researched and prepare a presentation from the findings. In times of endless information it is a challenge to filter the relevant data and to analyze it in the right manner. The more experience I have the more relevant and precise my results will be.

unforgettable impressions
I had absolutely a great day yesterday. First I leraned many new things about our company and during the lunch time I went with Swetlana to the St' Patty's Day parade. It was really nice to saw the parade and especially the Empire State Building illuminated green. After my work I ran for the first time through Manhattan, it was very nice because met other runners, who also run every Wednesday, and it was much easier to find good running paths. We ran along the east river and I saw many people playing sports just like people in my villages. ;-)

The first impression was amazing!
My name is Sebastian and I am one of the interns at Bertelsmann, Inc. I arrived in NY last Friday, which was a very rainy day. During the weekend I organized different things which were important for my first day in office (Metro Card, maps...etc.). My first day on Monday was awesome. Freddie, Christian, Swetlana and Tiffany, my new co-workers there, are very friendly and stood all time at my side. Hopefully they weren’t angry with me because I had so many questions ;) "Tiffany, Could you help me...Do you know...!!! I am very happy to be part of your company and I will work to improve my English skills and to performance well, I hope you have a short overview!

It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood.....
It’s a beautiful day in NYC. The sun is shining, birds are singing and a slight breeze fills the busy NY streets. Its finally nice weather, it came at a good time since this is my spring break and I am staying in NY to intern and work. Last week Swetlana Chris and I explored the office for picture perfect locations so we can show all of you what we look like and where we work. This week I plan to shoot some footage for the many projects that I have been assigned. I’m excited to let my creativity flow into the Bertelsmann atmosphere. As I explore the office I think I’m going to start a segment I like to call, “Guess that object”. Upon checking out the media lab I came across something interesting. Underneath wires, keyboards, computer mouse’s and speakers I found a …. hmm how about you guys guess? It’s a circular object, it has three holes relatively close to each other, its solid, and mildly heavy … *INSERT JEOPARDY MUSIC* Times up! Yes, you guessed it, it’s a bowling ball!! What this has to do with my projects I’m not sure yet. Maybe it will be revealed later or maybe this is a sign that they are taking me and Swetlana on a bowling trip. Either way I’m all for it, more random object findings to come, stay tuned. Until next time!

Value of time
The time is running! It’s now more than 1 month since I am here in New York. In the last week I was very busy with my project. Nearly each morning started with “I have a question…”, “What is…?”, “Can I..?”. It was a huge challenge for me and my colleagues to find the right answer to the questions. In this spirit thank you for your support. Things in my internship are definitely going smoothly. In the last week Chris, Tiffany and I had a photo session in order to give you an impression of the interns at Bertelsmann.
I am enjoying every day of my internship that I stay in New York. For someone who’s living his/her whole life in New York would not understand what this means for me and surely for all other people with the same dream. People get used to things and someday things which were valuable became just part of the life. But that’s the way most humans are.
So, take some minutes to look around you and realize the value of things which are so self-evident.

Hello World!!
My name is Tiffany McPherson and I am one of the two interns at Bertelsmann, HR Services in NYC!! Hmmmm …..Where to begin? I am a Jersey native but moved to New York to attend St. John’s University in Queens. I am in my last year of school and will be graduating in May. Excited and nervous all in one. My major is television and film production and that is what I am doing here at Bertelsmann, concentrating on projects in this area. I really have enjoyed my time here so far. I am getting exposed to so many other aspects that I don’t think I could get at any other internship. Since Bertelsmann is such a diverse company and has so many different areas it’s really exciting to explore them all and see how they all ultimately work together. The team is awesome Freddie, Mio and Chris have warm personalities which makes for a great work environment. They make it really comfortable to work here and be productive, as they really listen to your ideas and help you build upon them. Since being asked on my interview, “If I like to eat?” I knew I would fit in just fine. Sharing a cubicle with my new German friend Swetlana is great, exposing each other to our cultural differences and becoming her NYC tour guide is definitely a bonus. While at Bertelsmann I just hope to gain all the knowledge I can on this broad company which will help me in my future career endeavors.

My first impressions of Bertelsmann in NY
My name is Swetlana and I am one of two new interns at Bertelsmann,Inc. Actually I don't know where to start. I am since beginning of February in New York and enjoy every second:-). After the telephone interview with Freddie Helrich I was so excited to make an internship in a city with so much spirit and in a company with an impressive history and success. I have high expectations of an internship which cover the aspects of self-fulfillment, challenges, a wide spectrum of career possibilities, internationality, freedom, success, fun and adventure. Bertelsmann fulfills all these aspects and even more.
Currently I am doing my last semester of my study and write my Bachelor Thesis in the company. Doing an internship is a great possibility of career orientation. Personally I wanted to find out if Bertelsmann is an attractive potential employer for my future career and if the entertainment area fits to my personal attitude. The first impression is amazing!
In the team I experience fun and high spirits. Everyone is motivated and in best mood. I will do this internship for further three months so I am looking forward to gain beneficial insights in the business, support the team and have a great and unforgettable time at Bertelsmann in New York.

I guess this is it!
Unfortunately this is the last time I blog. My graduation was last Thursday and today I just came in to wrap things up. This morning when I walked in to the office I realized how much I had missed it, and its only 4 days since I was here last time. My experience here at Bertelsmann HR Services and in New York has probably been the best in my life and I still think that I haven’t fully realized how much I learned. I am really going to miss everybody at the office, the cubes, the coffee, the lunches, all the friends I met and all the good times. I am a person that always sees everything in a positive way. Therefore I am not saying goodbye, just until next time. I am not sad that I am not going to be here every day anymore, I am happy that I got the opportunity. I am not sad to leave all the people that I met behind, I am just happy that I got to get to know them. To Mio, Freddie, Chris and my fellow interns; Thank you guys for making my internship such a wonderful experience!
