Behind the Scenes: Bertelsmann HR Services Internship Blog
Meet our Interns at Bertelsmann HR Services
HR Services at Bertelsmann has put together our list of interns and asked them to blog about their experiences working for a recruiting services department at a major media company.
Our interns work on many projects that are connected to the daily functions of our business units in the book publishing, music publishing, TV production, online and service units.
This is a great opportunity to hear first hand what its like to work across Bertelsmann from the people who are in the internships!
Value of time
The time is running! It’s now more than 1 month since I am here in New York. In the last week I was very busy with my project. Nearly each morning started with “I have a question…”, “What is…?”, “Can I..?”. It was a huge challenge for me and my colleagues to find the right answer to the questions. In this spirit thank you for your support. Things in my internship are definitely going smoothly. In the last week Chris, Tiffany and I had a photo session in order to give you an impression of the interns at Bertelsmann.
I am enjoying every day of my internship that I stay in New York. For someone who’s living his/her whole life in New York would not understand what this means for me and surely for all other people with the same dream. People get used to things and someday things which were valuable became just part of the life. But that’s the way most humans are.
So, take some minutes to look around you and realize the value of things which are so self-evident.
Enjoy!

Hello World!!
My name is Tiffany McPherson and I am one of the two interns at Bertelsmann, HR Services in NYC!! Hmmmm …..Where to begin? I am a Jersey native but moved to New York to attend St. John’s University in Queens. I am in my last year of school and will be graduating in May. Excited and nervous all in one. My major is television and film production and that is what I am doing here at Bertelsmann, concentrating on projects in this area. I really have enjoyed my time here so far. I am getting exposed to so many other aspects that I don’t think I could get at any other internship. Since Bertelsmann is such a diverse company and has so many different areas it’s really exciting to explore them all and see how they all ultimately work together. The team is awesome Freddie, Mio and Chris have warm personalities which makes for a great work environment. They make it really comfortable to work here and be productive, as they really listen to your ideas and help you build upon them. Since being asked on my interview, “If I like to eat?” I knew I would fit in just fine. Sharing a cubicle with my new German friend Swetlana is great, exposing each other to our cultural differences and becoming her NYC tour guide is definitely a bonus. While at Bertelsmann I just hope to gain all the knowledge I can on this broad company which will help me in my future career endeavors.
Over and out!

My first impressions of Bertelsmann in NY
My name is Swetlana and I am one of two new interns at Bertelsmann,Inc. Actually I don't know where to start. I am since beginning of February in New York and enjoy every second:-). After the telephone interview with Freddie Helrich I was so excited to make an internship in a city with so much spirit and in a company with an impressive history and success. I have high expectations of an internship which cover the aspects of self-fulfillment, challenges, a wide spectrum of career possibilities, internationality, freedom, success, fun and adventure. Bertelsmann fulfills all these aspects and even more.
Currently I am doing my last semester of my study and write my Bachelor Thesis in the company. Doing an internship is a great possibility of career orientation. Personally I wanted to find out if Bertelsmann is an attractive potential employer for my future career and if the entertainment area fits to my personal attitude. The first impression is amazing!
In the team I experience fun and high spirits. Everyone is motivated and in best mood. I will do this internship for further three months so I am looking forward to gain beneficial insights in the business, support the team and have a great and unforgettable time at Bertelsmann in New York.
Enjoy your weekend!

I guess this is it!
Unfortunately this is the last time I blog. My graduation was last Thursday and today I just came in to wrap things up. This morning when I walked in to the office I realized how much I had missed it, and its only 4 days since I was here last time. My experience here at Bertelsmann HR Services and in New York has probably been the best in my life and I still think that I haven’t fully realized how much I learned. I am really going to miss everybody at the office, the cubes, the coffee, the lunches, all the friends I met and all the good times. I am a person that always sees everything in a positive way. Therefore I am not saying goodbye, just until next time. I am not sad that I am not going to be here every day anymore, I am happy that I got the opportunity. I am not sad to leave all the people that I met behind, I am just happy that I got to get to know them. To Mio, Freddie, Chris and my fellow interns; Thank you guys for making my internship such a wonderful experience!
Until next time, take care of yourselves.
Sincerely,
Nina

Miguel's last week as an intern
This week we have our final presentation on Thursday and I can honestly say that if I were in any other kind of situation I would be probably more stressed about it than I actually am. Everybody here has given me the confidence to speak to them without worries, I feel more secure and better at what I want to communicate.
I just can say thank you to all the team. Seriously I hope you understand what working here has meant to me. You are great!
Miguel
A little bit of this and a little bit of that
Sorry for not keeping you up to date for a while but here comes a new update about the adventures at Bertelsmann HR Services. Thanksgiving has passed and I had a great time, one of my friends from New Paltz invited me to his house for a traditional American Thanksgiving, which was great. The food was delicious and I have decided to start Thanksgiving in Sweden. My plan is to print out different recipes, divide them up amongst my friends and have a thanksgiving dinner.
Work has also been great and Victoria presented her final project this week. She is now on her way back to Germany and she will be truly missed in the office. Next Thursday is my last day so right now all my time is devoted to my final project which is about finding a winning model for a keyword marketing campaign. It is quite tricky but I am slowly moving forward.
Yesterday we went to Agua Dulce for Holiday Cocktails. It was a lot of fun with good food, nice drinks and great company.
I guess that’s it for this time. Enjoy your weekend everybody, I know I will:)

It’s a very sad Week . . .
Bad news
#1 . The internship is coming to an end. I never realized it but I didn’t spent much time at Bertelsmann AG. After tallying the days and hours spent in the office out of the six interns I’ve been here the least. I started in October and will leave in December and for 3 days a week and a few hours a day it really hasn’t been a lot of time. But I hope my presence has been just as significant as the other interns.
# 2. Bertelsmann HR services lost their gorgeous German intern: Viktoria Gass. Who has finished her studies in New York and has to return to Germany to take her final exams. I’ll miss learning German at work from her but look forward to crossing paths and seeing her in the future. We’ll keep in contact through facebook!
The good news
In celebration of the holidays the interns were cordially invited to attend an amazing Bertelsmann Party, last night. It really helped create holiday spirit! As a surprise the interns even got a special mention from our COO Rob in his holiday/ year end speech. It was an amazing way to spend our last day with Viktoria and it made saying our good byes a lot easier.
Hope everyone feels the holiday spirit as well! More next week!
Best,
Wendy Eng

Thanksgiving week at Bertelsmann
Hi everybody, I have only three more weeks left in New York City and working as an intern at Bertelsmann HR Services. The last couple of weeks have been the best yet; the whole team has been working in individual and team projects. Each one of the interns has by now decided what their own final project will be and we are all working a lot in them.
Today, the whole team shot a holiday special video. It was so much fun doing it and watching all the bloopers with everybody. We really messed up at the beginning but it’s all fixed now. Also Jeff Pollard (me and Nina’s IIB coordinator) took us and the guys to a great Japanese restaurant just around the corner, they had really weird dishes but it ended up being a great experience.
Having this little time left in the City is driving me nuts, there is still so much to see and do and it really never ends and never gets old. Just walking around makes you learn so much about not only the American culture, but also how easily people from all over the world can live together in such a cool atmosphere. I’m just grateful to have this experience and working with these guys, they’ve really given me some awesome tips on what to do after work and get to see as much as I can in this short time. It really seems a long run at first, but now the time is flying and you have to remember to squeeze as much as you can from it.

Never-ending Adventure
Since it is already Friday again I thought that it would be a good idea to update you on what has been going on this week. Time has been flying by and it feels like it only goes faster and faster. This week I have finished my project about social networks in different countries. The project has been a lot of fun and I believe that the presentation turned out really good. I have also decided what to do for my final project, but I have to do some more research before I tell you more about it. I have also been helping Freddie out with the Bertelsmann University, and since I am a management major it has been really cool to get some pointers on what to think about when hosting an event like this. We have also decided to make a video about how it is to intern at Bertelsmann so this week we have been having brainstorm meetings and our plan is to start filming on Monday. The idea is really cool so I hope that it turns out good.
Yesterday I went to Dave & Busters for the first time in my life and it was so much fun. I also saw the midnight premiere of New Moon, the second Twilight movie, and it was awesome. The funny thing is that the cinema was packed with young girls with Twilight t-shirts and every time one of the good looking guys was shown on the screen everybody was clapping and “ohh-ing”. Very different from going to the cinema in Sweden, and a cool experience. On Thursday the whole IIB group went ice skating in Bryant Park. It was really cool to play around on ice skates in the middle of Manhattan, and every time I looked up it felt surreal. So my life in New York continues, I am learning and experiencing a lot and the adventure is never-ending :)
Take care and have a wonderful weekend!
/Nina
